PROVIEH is Germany’s oldest and largest organization devoted to improving farm animal welfare, working toward humane livestock care and against ruthless industrial exploitation of farm animals in factory-style farms. PROVIEH sees farm animal welfare not only as an ethical issue, but also in terms of supplying consumers with healthier meat and dairy products, and protecting the environment and natural resources. Through lobbying activities in Berlin and Brussels, and consumer and media information campaigns, PROVIEH raises public awareness about appalling livestock practices and their consequences.

Working Group for Family Farming (AbL)

AbL represents the interests of Germany’s small- and medium-scale farmers, working to raise awareness of the social aspects of agriculture, and promoting socially and ecologically sustainable farming. AbL works with a broad coalition of consumer, environmental and animal protection groups, as well as individuals, to campaign for the preservation of family-scale agriculture. AbL also promotes high-quality food production and regional production systems for the benefit of farming communities and consumers alike.

Bioland is Germany’s main federation of organic farmers and food producers. Bioland products are grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, farm animals are treated humanely, and all foods are produced with the highest care. About 4,000 organic farmers and 800 producers follow Bioland’s guidelines. Bioland products are available in a wide variety of settings, from farmers’ markets and farm stores, to delivery services and supermarkets.

NEULAND develops high standards for animal- and environment-friendly livestock husbandry and provides labels for sustainably produced products sold by supermarkets, meat markets, restaurants, catering firms and other outlets. NEULAND supports small-scale operations and works to guarantee a fair price for their products.

Four Paws (Vier Pfoten)

Four Paws works to improve farm animal conditions throughout Europe, with offices in Germany, Austria, Hungary, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Romania, the Netherlands and the UK, as well as an EU lobbying office in Brussels. Four Paws’ campaigns include banning cages for egg-laying hens, banning the cloning of farm animals, improving livestock transport conditions and improved conditions for broiler (meat) chickens.

Erna Graff Foundation for Animal Protection

The Erna Graff Foundation communicates with the consumers and farmers of tomorrow: children. Through radio programs and educational materials, the group reaches 10,000 young people in hopes of teaching them greater respect for animals and how to become sustainability-minded consumers.

Foundation on Future Farming

The Foundation on Future Farming supports ecologically and socially sustainable agriculture, by promoting organic farming as the model for future agricultural policies. Its aim is to develop a lively and forward-looking economy and culture in which both urban and rural areas have a stimulating effect on each other. The group’s projects include Save our Seeds, which is dedicated to keeping conventional and organically grown seeds free of GMOs.
